What To Do When A Dental Crown Falls Off

Losing a dental crown can be scary.

Losing a dental crown can be scary. One minute you're chewing or brushing your teeth, the next thing you know, your crown is gone. While it's definitely alarming, it is a manageable emergency, and acting quickly can help you protect your tooth and save the crown. Here is what our emergency dentists recommend you do when you lose a tooth.

Step 1: Find Your Crown

If you can, save your missing crown. If it has fallen out of your mouth, handle it with care. If it is still loose in your mouth, do not try to push it back down on the tooth. Instead, gently remove the crown to prevent swallowing or further damage.

Step 2: Rinse The Area

Rinse your tooth with warm salt water. Rinsing cleans it and reduces any irritation from the exposure. Then, gently rinse your crown with lukewarm water to remove any debris. Do not use hot water because it could distort the crown.

Step 3: Check The Tooth

Take a quick look at the exposed tooth. It may feel sensitive to temperature or pressure, which is normal. If it is painful, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until you’re able to see an emergency dentist in Logan, Utah.

Step 4: Protect the Tooth

If you cannot get to the emergency dentist right away, the most important thing is you protect your exposed tooth. Keep it clean with gentle brushing and rinses. Never use household glue or attempt to permanently secure the crown on your own. Adhesives can permanently damage your tooth.

Step 5: Manage Tooth Discomfort

It’s common for the exposed tooth to feel sensitive. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort. Here are some more tips to manage pain from our emergency dentists. Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky items will also reduce irritation until you receive professional care. If the area is sharp, you can place sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax on the tooth to create a temporary barrier to prevent irritation to your tongue or cheeks.

Step 6: Call An Emergency Dentist

Even if you’re not experiencing pain, it’s important to schedule an appointment right away with an emergency dentist. The longer your tooth remains unprotected, the greater the risk of permanent damage.

Step 7: Ask About Same-Day Crowns

If our emergency dentists need to replace your crown, we offer same-day service. Using CEREC crowns, an advanced solution that allows us to design, create, and place your new crown on-site.
