Toothaches are uniquely painful because of their location. Whether the pain is sharp, throbbing, or dull, it’s hard to think about anything else until you get help. At Logan Peak Dental, Dr. David Gordon and our team know how awful it can be to deal with dental pain. That’s why we offer immediate appointments with our emergency dentist right here in Logan, Utah. Here’s what to do to hold the pain back until your appointment:
Cold, hot, or sugary foods can exacerbate tooth pain. If you’re waiting to see us, stick with soft, mild foods and avoid extremes in temperature. Water is the safest choice for drinking. You can also chew on the opposite side of your mouth to help reduce discomfort.
Food particles, sugar, and bacteria can worsen tooth pain. Gently brush and floss around the sore area, being careful not to irritate the tooth further. If flossing is uncomfortable, rinsing with warm water can still help keep things clean until you’re in the chair.
Swelling and inflammation often come with toothaches. Place a cold compress on your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time. A cold compress can help reduce inflammatory swelling and provide some relief until you can see us.
A saltwater rinse is one of the most effective home remedies for tooth pain. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Then swish the saltwater gently for about 30 seconds. Warm Saltwater can help reduce irritation and cleanse the area.
Painkillers like Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) can help reduce both pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is another option. You can also try a topical relief agent like Orajel.
Toothaches are a sign of a cavity, infection, or other dental issue that requires professional care. If you do not treat them right away, simple issues can become complex, expensive repairs. If you have tooth pain, call our emergency dentist in Logan as soon as possible.
