Do Dental Implants Hurt?

The number one thing patients ask us about dental implants is, “Is it going to hurt?”

The number one thing patients ask us about dental implants is, “Is it going to hurt?” Totally fair question. No one enjoys waiting in a dental chair wondering what’s coming next. Fortunately, dental implant surgery isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as most people imagine. Between advanced numbing, gentle techniques, and all our comfort-care options here in Logan, we do everything we can to make the process as pain-free as possible.

What It Feels Like During Dental Implant Surgery

When we place dental implants, you’re nice and numb the whole time. You might feel a little pressure or vibration, but not pain. We’re gentle and we move at your pace. While we’re working, we do everything possible to keep you cozy. You can watch movies on the ceiling TV, wear Bluetooth headphones, snuggle up with a soft or weighted blanket, and grab a neck pillow if that helps. We even have fidget spinners or cubes if you like having something to do with your hands. Add in a little lavender, citrus bliss, or peppermint essential oil from our diffuser, and it honestly feels more like a chill spa visit than dental surgery.

What It Feels Like After Dental Implant Surgery

Once the numbness wears off, your mouth might feel a little sore or puffy for a few days. Think of it like the tenderness after a good workout, not sharp pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers work great. Ice packs help if you’re swollen, and rest really does make a difference. Most people tell us they expected it to hurt more than it actually did, and they’re surprised how quickly they feel normal again. However, if you do feel pain, give us a call and we’ll walk you through it.

How Good At-Home Care Can Help You Heal Faster From Dental Implant Surgery

The way you care for your mouth at home after dental implant surgery plays a huge role in your comfort. Keeping things clean and calm helps everything heal smoothly. Here are a few simple ways to make recovery easier:

  • Use ice packs on your cheek to help with swelling during the first 24–48 hours.
  • Stick to soft foods like yogurts, soups, and smoothies in the beginning.
  • Rinse the dental implant gently with warm salt water to soothe your gums and clean the area.
  • Avoid poking or brushing directly around the implant site until it starts to heal.
  • Take your pain meds on schedule so you stay ahead of any soreness.
  • Rest as much as you can and give your body time to heal.

Also, follow any specific instructions that our dentists give you. When you take care of your mouth, your dental implants settle in more smoothly, and any tenderness fades much faster.

With the right care from the right team, dental implant discomfort can be minor. If you’ve been putting off getting dental implants because you’re worried about pain, see us. We put patient comfort first.
