Am I A Good Candidate For Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a teeth straightening solution that’s quite a bit more discreet when compared to traditional braces.

Clear aligners are a teeth straightening solution that’s quite a bit more discreet when compared to traditional braces. These are made up of a series of clear trays, which are placed onto the teeth when not eating or drinking, and they gently shift crooked teeth into place. They are removable, they are able to be easily washed, and they’re preferred by many when compared to going through the process of traditional braces.

One of the biggest perks of clear aligners is that they’re discreet. Unless someone is up close, they’ll likely not realize you’re wearing any sort of clear aligner at all. Additionally, they can be more comfortable when compared to braces as well. They have none of the rubbing, poking, or “adjustment period” braces are so commonly known for.

While many want to go the route of clear aligners, not everyone is a candidate for them. Some alignment needs are more complicated, and in these cases traditional braces are often preferred. What may disqualify a person from being a good candidate for clear aligners? A few complications are:

  • Severe overcrowding – Those who have severe dental overcrowding may not be an ideal candidate for clear aligners versus traditional braces. Typically, severe overcrowding leads to tooth rotation, and clear aligners typically aren’t able to rotate teeth more than around 20%. Additionally, if a tooth tilts backwards or forwards in the mouth more than 40 degrees, traditional braces may be a better solution.
  • Incorrect tooth shape – If you have teeth that are shaped uniquely, you may find it difficult to achieve the results you want from clear aligners. Many aligners have a difficult time gripping to teeth that are pegged or have a particularly pointed shape, and this may defeat the purpose of the aligners altogether.
  • Poor oral health – While clear aligners can help to straighten teeth, they’re only to be used on healthy teeth. Those with cavities or other dental issues that need to be addressed, or those with receding gums, may find that clear aligners are not the best solution for them until these problems are resolved.

The best dentist will walk you through the process of getting clear aligners, and make sure you’re a great candidate to ensure the best success. While a few issues may disqualify a person from being a candidate for clear aligners, most looking to straighten their teeth with them find the experience to be positive.
